Harana for the Aswang @ BASE 2023
Harana for The Aswang is an audio-visual-performance work centered on the research of harana, a Filipinx serenade song form rooted in courtship and grief rituals. Moonyeka + The House of Kilig center on 7 Aswang archetypes: (1) Manananggal, (2) Duyoung/Sirenx (3) Waling-Waling Orchid (4) Maria Makiling (5) Giantess (6) Mayari (7) Dalikmata. Aswang is an umbrella term for various shapeshifting, mythological, animist, folkloric, "evil" spirits and creatures in Filipino folklore.
These harana serenades are in service and in reverence to Aswang spirits through all multidimensions, timelines, past, present and future. This multidisciplinary project re-myths and re-centers the stories of Aswang through the eyes of Aswang. Here, Moonyeka + The House of Kilig reclaim the Aswang as the misfit, marginalized, bad ass diasporic spirits. This research seeks to uncover Legend, Myth, Icon states of being and how these archetypes have been used for colonial propaganda and violent erasure of QT, Filipinx histories, and spiritualities.
